Solar Panels
Types of Solar Panels
There are three main types of solar panel: monocrystalline, polycrystalline, and thin-film. For the vast majority of UK homes, monocrystalline is the right choice.
Monocrystalline
Cut from a single silicon crystal, monocrystalline panels are the most efficient on the market — typically 20–22% efficiency. They cost more per panel but produce more power per square metre, which matters on smaller or partially shaded roofs. Most premium residential systems use monocrystalline.
Polycrystalline
Made from multiple silicon fragments, polycrystalline panels are cheaper to manufacture and slightly less efficient — around 15–17%. The efficiency gap has narrowed in recent years, but monocrystalline still performs better in low-light conditions, which matter in the UK climate.
Thin-film
A flexible, lightweight option most commonly used in commercial and industrial applications — flat roofs, awnings, or where weight is a constraint. Efficiency is lower (10–13%) and they require significantly more roof space. Not recommended for standard UK residential roofs.
Which panel brand should I choose?
Brand matters less than the panel's efficiency rating, temperature coefficient, and warranty terms. Look for a product warranty of 10–12 years and a performance guarantee of at least 80% output after 25 years. We only fit panels from manufacturers with a proven track record and UK service presence.
We would not recommend buying the cheapest panel available. The efficiency difference is modest but the degradation rate and warranty support over 25 years can vary significantly between manufacturers.
